so ive been on HF for about 8 months now and one of the things that keeps bugging me is how wildly different everyone sounds on SSB. like some guys come in crisp and punchy and i can copy them through a pile of noise no problem, and then other guys — sometimes running way more power — just sound like theyre talking through a wet paper bag. ive started paying way more attention to this because honestly my own audio is probably not great and i want to fix it.

my current setup is a ts-590sg into a sure-e something mic that came with a starter kit. VOX is on because i got lazy and never really set up a footswitch properly. compression is at like 4 or 5 on the rig. im running USB on 40m mostly, some 20m. ive had a couple guys tell me my audio is fine and one guy last week said i sounded a little muffled. so clearly something is off, at least some of the time.

what actually makes the biggest difference? is it mic choice, position, the room your in, compression settings? i feel like ive read a billion things online and everyones advice contradicts everyone else. someone says max the speech processor, someone else says leave it at zero. who do i trust here

the muffled thing is almost always mic position or proximity effect — if youre too close to most dynamic mics you get this bass buildup that sounds awful on SSB. try moving it back a few inches and see if that changes things. also your room matters more than people admit, a lot of shacks are basically just parallel walls and a hard floor and that makes for terrible acoustics which the mic just picks up faithfully.

on the compression question, yeah its a mess of opinions but my take after a long time doing this is: a little goes a long way. the speech processor on the 590 is actually pretty decent but cranking it to max just pumps everything and you end up with artifacts and it sounds harsh on the other end. i usually sit around 3-4 and call it done. the bigger gain honestly comes from getting the mic gain set right in the first place — most people either drive it too hot which clips before the processor even does anything useful, or too low and the processor is trying to amplify noise. find the sweet spot on your ALC and work from there.

VOX is fine for casual operating but it does cut the first syllable of your transmission if your threshold isnt dialed in perfectly, which can mess with readability more than any audio quality issue. worth setting up a paddle or footswitch eventually.

honestly the mic matters more than people want to admit. those bundle mics are usually pretty mediocre, not terrible but not great either. i switched to an heil pr-781 a couple years ago and got way more reports of good audio. but its not magic — you still have to EQ it right for the rig and set your levels. kenwood rigs have that mic EQ menu buried in the settings, worth digging into if you havent.

one thing i dont see mentioned enough is just... monitor yourself. most modern rigs have a monitor function where you can hear your own transmitted audio in the headphones at low level. use it. sounds obvious but i went like two years without doing that and had no idea what i actually sounded like on air.
