so i've been licensed for about 4 years now mostly doing SSB and some digital modes but i always told myself id learn morse code eventually and i think this winter is finally the time. bought a cheap set of paddles off ebay and borrowed a keyer from a friend at the club and ive been practicing with the Koch method app on my phone for a few weeks now.

my question is really about the actual on-air stuff. like i can copy most letters at around 13 wpm in the app but when i actually tune around 40m i can barely pull anything out. is that just how it is at first? like does it take a while before real QSO code sounds the same as practice code? also not sure if my sending is any good either — when i listen back to recordings of myself it sounds kind of hesitant and the spacing is all weird. is there a trick to getting the timing more natural or is it just reps

yeah that gap between copying code in an app vs real signals is totally normal and honestly it trips up almost everyone. the app is clean, consistent speed, no QRM, no fading, and the letters just come one after another in a predictable way. on 40m you've got guys with slightly different timing, QSB, maybe some interference, and suddenly your brain just locks up. what helped me was finding the slow speed CW nets — there's a few that run around 5-10 wpm specifically for people learning and they're super patient. also SKCC has a lot of members who will slow right down for you if you just send QRS.

on the sending side, the hesitant thing is almost certainly just tension. people death-grip the paddle when they're nervous and it shows. try to consciously relax your hand and let the keyer do the work. most decent keyers with iambic mode will sort the timing out if you just trust it. honestly the biggest thing is just making contacts even when you feel like you're not ready — you learn way faster in an actual QSO than any other way

im kind of in the same boat as you, been at it maybe 3 months now and the on-air stuff is SO different from practice. one thing that helped me was finding recordings of actual QSOs on youtube and just listening to those instead of the app sometimes, gets your ear used to the rhythm of real operating rather than the robotic practice tones. also what paddles did you end up with off ebay if you dont mind me asking, trying to figure out if i should upgrade from the one im using
