RTL-SDR vs SDRplay for general listening / HF with upconverter

so ive been messing with an RTL-SDR v3 for about 6 months now and honestly its been great for learning but im starting to hit the walls on dynamic range, especially on 40m at night when the band is busy. the direct sampling mode works ok but its pretty noisy and i keep reading that an SDRplay RSP1A would be a noticeable step up.

my main use is just general monitoring, some aircraft stuff with dump1090 which obviously the RTL handles fine, and id like to do more shortwave and eventually get into decoding some of the digital modes on HF. im running SDR# on windows mostly but ive played with SDR++ a bit which i actually think i like better now.

question is whether the RSP1A is worth the price difference over just getting a better upconverter for the rtl dongle. ive seen the SpyVerter recommended a bunch but not sure if im just throwing money at a problem that a proper receiver would solve more cleanly. anybody made that jump and actually noticed a big difference day to day

made that exact jump about two years ago, went from rtl with a ham-it-up upconverter to an RSP1A and yeah it was noticeable, not like night and day dramatic but definitely cleaner on crowded bands. the dynamic range improvement is real, strong broadcast stations were wiping out chunks of 40m on the rtl setup and that mostly went away. SDR# works fine with it through the SDRplay plugin but honestly i switched to SDR++ and havent looked back, the noise floor visualization alone is worth it.

that said if youre mainly doing aircraft and casual shortwave the RTL with a decent upconverter isnt bad and you can always sell the dongle after. the RSP1A is just a more complete tool, less fiddling to get it working reasonably well on HF.

i'd throw a vote in for looking at the HackRF too if you want something that does TX eventually, totally different use case but just worth knowing its in that same price neighborhood. for pure receive though the SDRplay stuff does have a better front end than a stock dongle, no question. dump1090 will keep working fine obviously since thats 1090 MHz and any of these handles that easy.
