New ham - should I start with a handheld or mobile rig?

Just passed my Technician exam and trying to decide on my first radio. Local ham store is pushing a dual-band mobile rig over a handheld, saying it'll be more enjoyable. Budget is around $200-300. I'm thinking mobile with power supply and base antenna might be the way to go for better range to local repeaters. What do you think for a complete beginner?
