finally caught a 10m opening yesterday — what's going on with the bands lately?

so i've been pretty frustrated with HF the last couple months, mostly just hearing noise on 20 and 40, occasionally getting some contacts but nothing spectacular. yesterday i just happened to spin over to 10 meters around 2pm local time and it was absolutely alive, i mean signals from south america were coming in like they were next door. worked a few stations in Brazil and Argentina and then it just kind of faded out again after maybe 45 minutes.

i checked the solar flux index after and it was sitting up around 160-something which i guess is pretty decent? im still trying to wrap my head around how all this actually works. like is there a threshold where 10m starts to reliably open up or is it always kind of random like that. also wondering if we're still climbing toward the solar cycle peak or if we're past it already because ive been seeing a lot of conflicting stuff online

yeah 10m has been doing some really fun things lately, you kind of have to just be there when it happens which is the annoying part. the short answer on SFI is that once you start seeing numbers above like 150 or so, 10m gets a lot more likely especially on paths toward lower latitudes. closer to 180-200 and it can be open for hours and to all kinds of places. but honestly even at lower flux you can get sporadic-E openings that'll blow your mind, totally different mechanism though.

as for the cycle, we're actually doing pretty well right now, cycle 25 has been outperforming a lot of the early predictions. some folks think we havent hit the peak yet, others think we're close. either way enjoy it while its cooking because 10m during a good cycle is just something else compared to the low years. keep an eye on DXmaps or pskreporter and you'll start to get a feel for when paths are opening up before you even key down

same thing happened to me last week, i was just scanning around and suddenly EA and CT stations everywhere on 10. i didn't even have my antenna tuned properly for that band and still pulled in a few contacts which tells you how good it was lol. i've started checking the spaceweather sites more regularly now just to get a rough idea of what to expect but honestly half the time i just stumble onto openings by accident
