finally putting together a go-kit, what am I forgetting

 Loading...

so ive been meaning to do this for like two years and after the storms we had last month that knocked out power for three days I figured its time to stop procrastinating and actually put something together. I got a Pelican 1510 case from a buddy and I'm starting to load it up but I keep feeling like I'm missing something obvious.

Right now I've got my Yaesu FT-857D, a SignaLink for digital, a 20ah LiFePO4 battery, and I've been running it all off a little power distribution block from West Mountain Radio. threw in some coax adapters and a basic dipole kit. Also tossed in a notebook and pencil because yeah sometimes the simple stuff matters.

I feel like the antenna situation is where I always get fuzzy. Like for actual field deployment for ARES stuff, what are you all running? I keep going back and forth between just a random wire with a tuner or something more purpose-built. Also wondering about documentation — like do you keep laminated freq lists or just trust your memory? I definitely don't trust my memory lol

anyway if you've got a go-kit that's actually been used in a real activation please share what you wish you'd thought of earlier

The laminated card thing is not optional in my opinion, seriously. I've been doing ARES activations for about twelve years now and the number of times I've seen operators (myself included early on) blank on a simplex frequency or a net check-in time when things get stressful is embarrassing. I keep a laminated card with our county's ARES frequencies, the regional NBEMS channels, and a quick reminder of net etiquette stuff — sounds dumb but when you haven't slept and the served agency is yelling at you it matters.

For antennas, honestly the EFHW with a 49:1 un-un has become my go-to because I can throw it in a tree with a fishing line launcher and be on 40 meters in like 15 minutes. Random wire with a tuner works too but sometimes those tuners get fussy when you're rushing. One thing I don't see you mention — do you have a way to charge that LiFePO4 in the field? Like a solar panel or a way to charge from a vehicle? Three days is fine on 20ah if you're not transmitting constantly but for a longer deployment you'll want options.

Also honestly the thing most people forget is food and water for themselves. You laugh but I've shown up to EOC activations where the operator is totally dialed in radio-wise and then crashes four hours later because they didn't eat.

im pretty new to all this (got my general last spring) but I just went through building my first go-kit for our local SKYWARN group and the one thing that surprised me was how much the cable management matters when you're actually in the field versus just at home. Like I thought I had everything figured out on my workbench but the first time I packed it up and tried to deploy it somewhere else it was just a tangled mess and i couldnt figure out what went where. I started using those velcro cable ties and labeling both ends of every coax run and it made a huge difference.

Also somebody in our club told me to keep a printed copy of my license in the kit which seems obvious but I hadn't thought of it.
