winlink through RMS gateway keeps dropping my connection partway through sending

 Loading...

so ive been messing with winlink express for a few months now and mostly its been fine for basic stuff but lately i keep having this issue where the connection to the RMS gateway establishes fine, i can see the handshake happen and the session starts, but then somewhere mid-transfer it just drops. doesnt matter if im sending or receiving. the message just sits there in the outbox marked as partially sent or whatever and i have to go in and manually clear it before i can try again.

running vara HF on 14109 usually, sometimes i try pactor if the band is quiet enough. the gateway im connecting to is only maybe 400 miles away so path shouldnt be the issue. ive checked my audio levels about a dozen times and they look reasonable in the vara tuning window. my radio is an ic-7300 connected via the usb cable so no external interface or anything, just the built in soundcard basically.

anybody seen this or know what im doing wrong. feels like it might be a timeout thing but i dont really know where to look for that in the config

yeah this sounds super familiar, had basically the same thing happening last winter. for me it turned out to be the ALC on the 7300 was creeping up mid-transmission and causing the signal to get sloppy enough that the gateway couldnt decode it cleanly anymore. vara would start the session fine because power was stable at first but then as things warmed up or whatever the ALC would kick in and mess up the waveform.

worth checking your RF power setting in the 7300 menu — for vara HF most people run it pretty conservatively, like 30-40 watts max, and you really dont want any ALC action at all. zero ALC is the goal. if your ALC meter is moving even a little during a vara transmission thats probably your culprit. also double check the USB send/recv levels in the radio's connectors menu, those can interact weirdly with winlink express's audio settings.

the timeout thing you mentioned is possible too but i'd rule out the RF quality issue first before digging into config files

which RMS gateway specifically, do you know if its a busy one? some of those high traffic nodes can be a bit flaky depending on how the sysop has things configured. i had a stretch where i kept blaming my setup and it turned out the gateway i was hammering had some kind of issue on their end and they eventually took it down for maintenance.

winlink express lets you pick alternate gateways in the channel selection window, might be worth trying a completely different one even if its farther away just to see if the behavior changes. also make sure your winlink express version is actually current, they push updates pretty regularly and some of the older builds had some weird session handling bugs that got fixed
