First HT recommendation for new General class - overwhelmed by options!

Just passed my General exam last week (still excited!) and I'm ready to get my first handheld. I've been reading reviews for weeks but there are so many options. With so many models available in 2026, choosing the right handheld transceiver (HT) can be overwhelming. Budget is around $150-200.

I'm looking for something that will work well for local repeater work and maybe APRS down the road. Should I consider price, functionality, modes of operation, ease of use, and overall value? Any suggestions on what features are must-haves vs nice-to-haves for someone just starting out?

Also - do I really need to get programming software right away or can I manage with manual programming initially?

Congratulations on passing General! For your budget and needs, I'd strongly recommend the Anytone AT-D878UVII Plus. It's a versatile handheld that excels in FM, DMR, and APRS functionality with a large color screen and built-in GPS. Perfect radio to grow into as you explore different aspects of the hobby.

I'd recommend getting radio programming software and cable so you can more easily program repeater and memory channels - makes the HT much easier to use since you can simply toggle through your stored channels. Search for RT Systems (commercial, easy to use) or CHIRP (freeware, less friendly) for your specific model.

As someone who just got licensed 6 months ago, I started with a Baofeng BF-F8HP Pro with upgraded 8-watt output and full-color screen for added functionality. Great entry-level choice that won't break the bank. You can always upgrade later once you figure out what aspects of ham radio interest you most!
