first WWFF activation - didnt realize how much goes into logging the ref properly

 Loading...

so i finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend at a local state park that has a KFFW reference and honestly i had a blast but i also made a bunch of rookie mistakes that i wanted to post about in case anyone else is in the same boat.

the biggest thing that tripped me up was the logging. i was using my normal paper log and just writing down callsigns and bands like i always do for portable ops, but when i got home and tried to upload to the WWFF logger i realized i hadnt recorded the time in UTC consistently and a couple of my entries were missing the signal reports entirely. the WWFF logger is pretty strict about the format and i had to go back and piece together what i could from memory which was not ideal.

also i only made 22 QSOs and i know the minimum for a valid activation is 44 so i technically didnt qualify the reference which is a bummer. the band conditions were rough and i only had about 3 hours before a thunderstorm rolled in. im going to go back and try again but just wondering if anyone has tips for working faster or attracting more callers. i self-spotted on POTA spots app but i dont think there's an equivalent for WWFF specifically? or is there and im just missing it

yeah the 44 QSO minimum catches a lot of people the first time, dont feel bad about it. the good news is you can go back and activate the same reference again and as long as you hit the threshold that time it counts. some folks treat the first visit as a scouting run anyway.

for spotting - wwff.us has a spots page and a lot of activators also post on the POTA spots app since there's overlap with hunters who chase both programs. announcing on your local club's facebook or email reflector the day before can also pull in a few extra chasers who will specifically look for you. and honestly if conditions are rough just call CQ a little longer before moving bands, sometimes it takes a minute for people to find you especially if youre not on a busy calling frequency.

the logging thing is real though, i'd strongly recommend switching to an app like HAMRS or even just a simple spreadsheet on your phone that forces you to record UTC. paper logs are fine but you have to be disciplined about it in a way that's easy to forget when youre also trying to operate and watch for weather and whatever else is going on in the field.

I had almost the exact same experience on my first activation, right down to the UTC time issue. What I do now is just keep my phone showing UTC the whole time I'm operating, like literally tape a piece of paper over the local time display so I stop glancing at the wrong thing out of habit. Sounds dumb but it works for me.

Also I found that 20m in the late morning is usually where I can rack up QSOs fastest, especially if youre in the eastern US. The European chasers are really active and they love WWFF references. Once you get a decent pile going it snowballs pretty quickly and 44 stops feeling like this huge mountain.
