finally decided to go for the Extra, worth it or overkill?

so ive been a General for about 3 years now and honestly never really thought about upgrading but my buddy at the club keeps saying i should just go for it. the theory sections on the Extra exam look pretty intimidating though, like the stuff about impedance matching and filter design and some of the oscillator theory goes way over my head right now. i know the HF privileges open up the lower portions of the bands which would be nice for DX but im not sure if i actually need all that extra bandwidth or if its just nice to have on paper.

did anyone else feel like the theory was way harder than it looked going in? im decent with antennas and basic circuits but some of this advanced RF theory stuff is pretty dense. also does anyone actually USE the knowledge from studying for it or is it mostly just memorize and forget like the lower exams?

yeah the Extra theory is a step up for sure, dont let anyone tell you otherwise. i spent probably 6 weeks going through the question pool before i felt comfortable and even then there were some questions about transmission line theory and Class A vs Class C amplifier operation where i was basically just hoping i remembered the right answer. but honestly the studying was worth it because i actually do understand my radio better now, like when somethings off with my SWR i have a better feel for whats happening instead of just poking around blind.

the band privileges are real too, especially on 40 and 80 meters the Extra portion at the bottom is way less crowded and you find some solid DX down there that generals just cant touch. so yeah id say go for it, just dont expect it to be a cakewalk

i just passed mine last month actually. the oscillator stuff and the filter Q calculations were the parts that got me, had to watch like 4 different youtube videos on LC circuits before it clicked. but the exam itself wasnt as bad as i thought once i really drilled the question pool. ham study dot com has a pretty good practice mode if you havent tried it.
