ok so i just passed my general a few months ago and ive been making contacts on HF and having a blast but now im trying to figure out this whole QSL confirmation thing and honestly its a bit overwhelming. like there are so many options and i dont really understand which ones matter for what.

so i signed up for LoTW because someone at my club said thats the one you need for DXCC and i uploaded my logs from WSJT-X but its been like two weeks and i havent seen any confirmations come in. is that normal? do both sides have to be on LoTW or does it just happen automatically once you upload?

also someone else told me eQSL is worth doing too but i looked at it and it seems kind of different, like you can make a fancy card design? and then theres actual paper cards which i think are cool but i have no idea how to get them or what the etiquette is around that. do people still actually send paper cards for digital mode contacts like FT8 or is that weird?

i know im asking like five questions at once, sorry. just trying to figure out the whole system before i go too far down the rabbit hole without understanding whats going on

yeah both sides have to upload to LoTW for it to match, thats the part that trips everyone up at first. LoTW doesnt confirm anything in real time, it just holds your logs and when someone else uploads and their data matches yours — same callsign, band, mode, date and time within like 30 minutes — it shows up as a QSL. so if youre working a lot of FT8 youll actually get matches faster than you might expect because a huge chunk of FT8 operators are on LoTW already. just be patient, i sometimes see confirmations trickle in for weeks or even months after a contact.

eQSL is kind of a different beast. its more of a social thing honestly, like people design their cards and its genuinely fun to browse. it does count for some awards but not DXCC which is the big one most people care about. some folks do both and theres nothing wrong with that.

and paper cards — dont count them out. yeah people absolutely still send them for FT8 contacts. its a hobby thing, not strictly necessary but a lot of ops really appreciate getting a physical card especially from a rare entity or a nice DX contact. you can get simple cards printed pretty cheap these days, QRZ even has a printing service i think. you just include your card with a self addressed envelope if youre requesting one back from someone in the US, or use the bureau system for overseas which is its own whole adventure.

I was in the exact same spot about a year ago so I totally get the confusion. One thing that helped me was just thinking of LoTW as the official one for awards that really matter to me, and eQSL as kind of a fun bonus. I do both now, takes maybe an extra two minutes after a session to upload to eQSL after I've already done LoTW.

The paper card thing is genuinely one of my favorite parts of the hobby though. I designed mine on Canva and got a batch of 500 printed, way cheaper than I expected. I don't send one for every contact but for anything interesting or a new country I'll drop one in the mail. Had a station in Japan actually write a little note back on his card which was really cool, felt more real than a database entry somehow. Anyway don't stress too much about getting it all perfect right away, you'll figure out your own system as you go
