Planning my first SOTA activation next weekend at a local 4-point summit. I've got a Yaesu FT-60R and planning to use 2m FM. Question: How do you guys find chasers on VHF? Should I just call CQ on 146.52 or use the local repeater to announce my activation? Any advice for a newbie would be appreciated!

Start on the simplex calling frequency 146.52. When activating within range of a populated area, you can usually just be successful calling CQ on the 2 Meter FM National Simplex Calling Frequency, 146.52 MHz. If no response, try the local repeater to ask folks to QSY to simplex. Good luck on your first one!

Don't forget to post a SOTA alert beforehand so chasers know you're coming! The elevation advantage really helps on VHF - you'll be surprised how far you can reach with just that little handheld.

An activator must achieve at least 4 two-way contacts to achieve a successful activation, using any amateur radio band or mode. Also try 70cm if you have it - many 2m ops can switch over for a second QSO. That's an easy way to build your count quickly.
