thinking about going for Extra, is it actually worth the hassle

 Loading...

so ive been a General for about two years now and i keep going back and forth on whether to bother with the Extra class exam. like i get that you get the full band privileges and the extra portions of HF open up but honestly i dont feel like i operate that much in those segments anyway. the theory questions are what worry me, like i remember struggling with some of the General pool stuff around impedance matching and filter theory and from what ive seen the Extra pool goes way deeper into that stuff. anyone actually been through it recently and can tell me if the extra theory is as rough as it looks or is it kind of the same deal where you just grind the question pool until it sticks. also not sure if the operating privileges are even that big a deal for what i do, mostly 40m and 20m ssb nothing fancy

honestly the Extra exam isnt as bad as people make it out to be once you sit down and actually go through the question pool systematically. yeah there's some hairy stuff in there, the laplace transforms and the filter design questions and all the stuff about transmission line theory, but heres the thing — you dont have to actually understand all of it deeply, you just need to recognise the right answer. i spent maybe six weeks going through the HamStudy flashcards every morning with coffee and i passed with room to spare. the privileges are worth it to me just for the satisfaction honestly, and having the full 80m and 160m segments available has been nice when things get crowded during contests. the theory is harder on paper than in practice for the test.

im in pretty much the same boat as you, been sitting on my General ticket for like 18 months telling myself ill study for Extra eventually. the thing that keeps tripping me up is the question about whether its worth it if youre not doing much CW or contesting. my elmer keeps saying just do it for the knowledge not just the license but then i look at some of those questions about phase locked loops and celestial mechanics or whatever and my brain just kind of goes blank. might just sign up for a test session to force myself to actually commit to studying
