so my buddy at the club keeps telling me i need to try CQ WW this october and i finally caved and said sure why not. ive done a couple of smaller contests before, worked Field Day twice with the club and did a SOTA activation back in the spring which was awesome, but nothing like a full on worldwide contest on my own. i run a pretty modest station, IC-7300 into a dipole up about 30 feet, nothing fancy.

what i dont really get is the zone multiplier system. like i understand DX contacts count more or whatever but the way people explain the zones always loses me halfway through. also is it realistic to even make a dent in CQ WW SSB running barefoot or am i just gonna sit there calling CQ into a void for 48 hours. genuinely asking, not trying to be self deprecating or whatever

also curious if anyone has tips for prepping logging software ahead of time because last Field Day i had N1MM crash on me right in the middle of a run and i almost threw my keyboard

haha yeah CQ WW is a whole different animal compared to Field Day, fair warning. but dont let that scare you off because running barefoot with a dipole is totally fine, especially if your dipole is up reasonably well and you have decent band conditions. the 30 foot height isnt ideal for DX but honestly ive heard guys with similar setups work 80-90 countries in a weekend so its absolutely doable.

the zone thing clicks once you just pull up a zone map and stare at it for like ten minutes. CQ zones, not ITU, people mix those up all the time. north america is mostly zones 3 4 and 5, europe is 14 through 18 roughly, you get the idea. every unique zone you work is a multiplier per band so thats why people get excited about working something weird like zone 23 or whatever. N1MM is solid but yeah save your log constantly and maybe do a test run before the contest weekend, make sure your callsign and exchange are set up right in the config or youll lose points for dumb reasons

i did my first solo CQ WW maybe three years ago now and honestly just jumping in is the best way to learn it. you will absolutely not work everyone you hear and thats fine, just log what you can and dont stress about your score. the atmosphere on the bands that weekend is unlike anything else, 20 meters is wall to wall signals and even with a dipole youll get answers if you find a spot and call. SOTA kinda preps you for the patience aspect i think, waiting for a pile to calm down is similar energy lol
