so ive been licensed about 8 months now and just starting to get into chasing DX a little more seriously. a buddy at my club mentioned DXwatch and i've been poking around on it for a few weeks but honestly im not totally sure im using it correctly or getting the most out of it.

like right now i just kind of load it up and look at whatever spots are showing up and then go tune around on those frequencies. sometimes i find the station, sometimes i dont. i dont really understand how to filter it down to just stuff that would actually be workable from my QTH. im in the midwest, running about 100w into a dipole up about 30 feet so nothing fancy.

also on QRZ i see there's a logbook and spotting stuff but i cant figure out how it ties in with the cluster. are these all pulling from the same underlying network or are they separate things? and is there a phone app that's actually worth using for this because i tried a couple and they all seemed kind of clunky. thanks in advance if anyone has any thoughts

yeah the cluster stuff can be a little overwhelming at first but it clicks pretty quick once you get the basic idea. DXwatch, the QRZ spots, DX Summit, they're all basically pulling from the same DX cluster network — it's a big interconnected web of nodes that hams feed spots into. so the data is mostly the same no matter which frontend you use, just displayed differently.

for filtering to your QTH, on DXwatch look for the options to set your continent or even your specific callsign zone. once you do that it'll show you propagation-relevant stuff more than just random spots from europe or wherever. honestly for your setup a dipole at 100w you're going to have pretty good luck on 17 and 20 meters for a lot of DX, maybe 40m in the evenings for closer stuff.

for apps i've been using DX Toolbox on and off for years but a lot of guys at my club swear by Ham Radio Deluxe if you want everything integrated. though HRD is not free anymore. there's also just using the mobile browser version of DX Summit which isnt pretty but it works fine on a phone.

same boat as you were a while back and just want to say the filtering thing on DXwatch took me forever to find too. theres a little gear icon or settings somewhere that lets you set your prefix and it changes what shows up. made a huge difference for me once i figured that out.
