ok so ive been licensed for about 3 months now (Tech class) and i finally got a decent HT, a Baofeng UV-5R which i know everyone has opinions about but its what i could afford right now. anyway theres a 2m repeater listed in the directory for my area and i programmed in the input/output frequencies but when i key up nobody seems to hear me or at least nobody responds. the repeater does open up when i transmit because i can hear the tail but thats it.

so i looked it up more and apparently theres something called a CTCSS tone i need to set? the listing on repeaterbook shows 100.0 Hz for the tone. i went into the menu and i think i set it but honestly the Baofeng menus are kind of a nightmare and im not 100% sure i did it right. is the CTCSS tone something the repeater needs to hear from me to let me in, or is it something i set to filter what i hear? or both? i feel like ive read three different explanations and theyre all slightly different.

also separate question — is there like a standard way to call on a repeater when youre new? i dont want to step on anyone or do something wrong without realizing it. ive been listening for a few days and mostly hear nothing but occasionally someone checks in.

yeah the CTCSS thing confuses a lot of new hams, dont worry about it. so basically there are two sides to it — the tone your radio transmits (sometimes called encode) and the tone your radio uses to squelch what you receive (decode). the repeater itself has an encoder and decoder too.

what you need to set is the encode side — that 100.0 Hz tone needs to go out with your signal so the repeater's controller knows to open up and pass your audio through. without it the repeater just ignores you, which is probably whats happening. on the UV-5R you want to go into the menu and look for something like T-CTCS (transmit CTCSS) and set that to 100.0. theres also R-CTCS which is receive side, you usually dont have to set that unless theres a lot of other interference you want to filter out.

as for calling on the repeater, most people just say their callsign and say listening or just say the callsign once or twice. something like W1ABC listening or just W1ABC for a contact. some repeaters have nets on certain nights so it helps to check if theres a schedule. just listen for a while first and you'll pick up the rhythm pretty quick. also if there's a break between conversations thats usually when you'd jump in and say your call.

the Baofeng menu thing is real, i spent like an hour on mine before i figured out the T-CTCS vs R-CTCS difference lol. one thing that helped me was just downloading CHIRP and programming it from the computer, way easier to see everything laid out. you can double check that the tone is set on the transmit side that way.

also dont stress too much about repeater etiquette at first — most people are pretty forgiving with new hams. just leave a little pause before you respond to someone so you dont step on them, and if youre not sure if the repeater is in use just listen for a minute before keying up. some clubs also have a specific courtesy tone that plays after someone finishes transmitting so you know its safe to go.
