thinking about going for Amateur Extra, is the theory part as rough as people say?

so ive been a General for about two years now and i keep going back and forth on whether to bother with the Extra class exam. i know the main draw is getting access to those extra band segments, especially on 20m and 40m where it can get pretty crowded in the General portions. but honestly what im more curious about is the theory side of things.

i looked at a sample question pool a while back and some of that stuff is no joke — filter design, transmission line theory, stuff about the smith chart that i only vaguely remember from an electronics class i took like fifteen years ago. is it actually as deep as it looks or does the question pool kind of give it away once you memorize enough of it? i guess what im asking is whether people actually learn the theory or just brute force it with the pool.

also does having the full privileges actually change how you operate day to day or is it more of a vanity thing at that point

honestly i went back and forth on this for like a year before i finally just sat down and did it. the question pool is big but if you use something like HamStudy or the ARRL Extra class book its manageable. i wont lie, i did a fair amount of memorization especially for the more obscure formula stuff, but i also genuinely learned things i didnt know before — like i actually understand impedance matching a lot better now than i did going in.

the privileges do matter if you're into DX chasing. during a pileup on 14.225 or wherever the General subband ends, having that extra slice of spectrum to work with is actually useful. not life changing but you notice it. i think the real value for me was just knowing the material better, i feel more confident troubleshooting my own station now. but yeah some people just memorize the pool and pass and theres nothing wrong with that either, its a multiple choice test at the end of the day.

i just passed mine like three weeks ago so this is fresh. the smith chart questions stressed me out way more than they should have tbh, but when it came to the actual test i only got maybe two or three questions that really made me think hard. a lot of it does come down to recognizing patterns from the question pool. that said i did go through the ARRL guide and read the theory sections properly because i figured if im gonna have the ticket i should at least understand what im doing.

the band privileges are nice but i mainly wanted the Extra for the vanity callsign option which i know sounds dumb but thats the truth. already applied for a 1x2 and waiting to hear back.
