so i finally worked up the nerve to check into a local 2m net last tuesday, been licensed for about 4 months now and i've just been listening mostly. the net control called for check-ins and i keyed up and gave my call but i think i stepped on someone else who was already transmitting? at least it sounded like there was a double when i heard the playback on the club's recording. nobody said anything to me and net control acknowledged me fine but i felt terrible about it.

also i wasnt sure when exactly to give my call — like do you wait for a full pause after the net control finishes talking or is there some specific timing thing i should know about. i've read the ARRL stuff but it's kind of vague on the actual feel of it if that makes sense. is there like an unwritten rule about how long to wait. i also wasn't sure if i was supposed to give my full call or just suffix, the other stations seemed to just give their suffix but i went full call which maybe sounded weird

anyway nobody kicked me off or anything so i guess it was okay but i want to do better next time

honestly you're overthinking it, and i mean that in the nicest way possible. stepping on someone occasionally happens to everyone, even operators who've been doing this for decades. the fact that net control acknowledged you means you got through fine. doubling is just part of VHF net life, especially when there's a big check-in rush.

on the timing question — yeah it really is just a feel thing that comes with time. generally you want to wait about a beat after net control finishes their last syllable, not a full second pause, more like just enough that they're clearly done. if you wait too long you'll overlap with someone else jumping in from a different part of the coverage area. some nets the NCS will pause deliberately to invite check-ins, others are more free-for-all.

as for full call vs suffix, honestly both are fine and it varies by net culture. some NCS actually prefer full calls for the log. i'd say just keep doing full call, it's never wrong and it's good habit especially if you're ever somewhere people don't know you. you did fine, just keep showing up and it'll click

same thing happened to me my first few check-ins lol. i accidentally kerchunked the repeater right as someone was wrapping up and just kind of froze. the club guys were super nice about it though. i think most nets are pretty forgiving especially if they can tell you're new. some of them the NCS will even give a shoutout to new hams checking in for the first time which is kind of cool
