Jennifer Wilson's post in finally decided to go for my general, what should i even be studying was marked as the answeryeah i went through the same thing a few months ago. i used both hamstudy and the arrl general book and i think having the book helped me actually understand whats going on instead of just memorizing answers, but honestly either way works for passing the test
one thing i wasnt ready for was how much HF operating is just kind of different from repeater stuff, like nobody is really holding your hand and you have to figure out band conditions and where to actually find people talking. 40 meters is a good starting point i think, lots of activity and the antenna requirements arent too crazy if you dont have a huge yard

Jennifer Wilson's post in RemoteHams SDR setup with internet linking — anyone done this? was marked as the answerthe SDR panadapter question is actually pretty reasonable — i run an Airspy HF+ Discovery on the same machine as my remote node and it doesnt really interact with the control latency at all because theyre separate data streams. the SDR IQ data is going out over its own connection, RCForb handles the rig control and audio separately. what you might run into is just raw bandwidth, especially if youre on a mediocre upload at the shack end. SDR data at higher sample rates eats bandwidth fast. i dropped my Airspy down to 192kHz and it was fine on a 10Mbps upload but anything above that was getting choppy during busy band conditions.
the Echolink bridging thing though, i honestly dont know if that gets weird with Part 97. you can monitor no problem but if your buddy is keying up through Echolink and it somehow gets routed back out on HF youre in a gray area maybe. id just set him up a read-only listener account in RCForb, think there might be an option for that, been a while since i dug into the settings.

Jennifer Wilson's post in collinear vs yagi for local repeater coverage from a fixed location was marked as the answerso ive been going back and forth on this for a while now and figured id just ask. i'm about 23 miles from the main repeater i use on 2m and its mostly flat terrain between me and it, maybe one small ridge but nothing serious. right now i have a diamond x50a up about 25 feet on a pushup mast and it works fine most of the time but when conditions are even slightly off i start getting into the repeater with audio that apparently sounds pretty rough on the other end.
a buddy of mine swears i should just put up a yagi pointed at the repeater and be done with it. like a 5 or 6 element job on a fixed mount. makes sense to me on paper but then i lose the ability to hit any other repeaters or work simplex in different directions which i do occasionally for things like ARES nets. honestly i dont know if the gain from a yagi would even make that much difference vs just getting the collinear up higher. im at about the limit of what my current mast can do so getting a taller tower isnt really in the cards right now. has anyone actually swapped from a omni to a directional for this kind of situation and was it worth it

Jennifer Wilson's post in confused about LoTW vs eQSL vs paper cards — which one actually counts? was marked as the answerokay so i just got my technician last month and ive been making contacts on 10m and 2m and people keep asking me if im on LoTW or eQSL and honestly i dont really understand the difference. like i set up a LoTW account because someone told me to but i havent actually uploaded anything yet because i cant figure out the certificate thing. and then theres eQSL which seems easier but someone at the club said it doesnt count for awards? and then some people still send actual paper cards through the bureau and i got a couple in the mail last week which was honestly pretty cool.
so my question is basically — do i need all three? is one better than the others for DXCC or whatever awards people go for? i dont even know if im chasing awards yet but i figured i should probably be confirming contacts properly from the start so i dont regret it later. any advice would be really appreciated, still learning all this stuff

Jennifer Wilson's post in getting better audio on SSB — what actually makes a difference was marked as the answerthe bass rolloff thing is real and it actually matters a lot for SSB. voice intelligibility on a 2.4 or 2.8 kHz passband is almost entirely in the 300 to 3000 Hz range and if you're pumping a lot of energy below 300 Hz it's just eating up your power budget without doing anything useful for readability. worse it can cause splatter if the low end is pushing your ALC around.
on the 7300 specifically there's a built in TX equalizer that's actually pretty decent. i'd start there before buying anything. cut below 300 Hz, maybe boost a little around 1.5 to 2 kHz for presence and see what you get. the other thing people sleep on is mic gain — most guys run it too high and then wonder why their audio sounds compressed and distorted. watch your ALC meter and keep it barely moving, like just kissing the bottom of the range. that alone probably fixes half your problem.
the speech processor on the 7300 is usable but subtle, dont crank it expecting miracles. it helps on marginal paths but too much and you start sounding like a robot and people will actually copy you worse not better.
