so ive been licensed about 8 months now and people keep telling me I should try a contest but honestly the whole thing is kind of intimidating. like I get the basic idea, you make as many contacts as possible and log them, but theres so much I dont understand about exchange formats and multipliers and all that stuff.

I was looking at the CQ WW coming up and it seems massive — like the whole world is on the air at once which sounds amazing but also terrifying if youre not sure what youre doing. someone at my club mentioned ARRL Field Day too but I thought that was more of a club/camping thing? and then theres SOTA which i think is different, not really a contest per se but people talk about it in the same breath sometimes.

anyway im not really sure what the best first contest would be for someone still figuring things out. my setup is pretty modest, IC-7300 and a wire dipole up about 25 feet, so im not going to be running a kilowatt or anything. just want to actually participate and not make a fool of myself on the air.

CQ WW is fantastic but yeah it can be a bit of a wall of sound if youve never done it before, especially on 40 or 20 during peak hours. honestly not a bad starting point though because the exchange is dead simple — you just give your signal report and your CQ zone, thats it. your zone is probably 4 or 5 depending where you are in North America so you just say it the same way every time.

Field Day is genuinely a great first experience if your club does it. its more relaxed, people are around to help you, and the whole point is kind of educational as much as competitive. id say if your club is doing Field Day go operate a few hours with them first, get the feel for running a pileup or hunting contacts, and then by the time fall contest season rolls around youll feel way more comfortable jumping into CQ WW or the ARRL Sweepstakes.

SOTA is a totally different animal — its about activating summits, way more hiking than radio honestly. still fun but not really the same kind of contesting. worth doing eventually just for the adventure side of it.

with an IC-7300 and a dipole you can absolutely make contacts in any of these. dont let the big gun stations intimidate you, just call CQ or go search and pounce and work what you can. everyone starts somewhere.

the Sweepstakes in November might actually be a better intro than CQ WW if you want something more domestic and a little less chaotic. the exchange is more complicated but everyone on is North American so the pace feels a bit more manageable to me at least. I did my first one last year and managed like 80 contacts which felt pretty good for a random Saturday afternoon.

also N1MM logger is free and worth setting up before any contest, makes logging so much easier and it handles all the exchange stuff so you dont have to remember everything yourself.
