SDRplay RSP1A vs just using a cheap RTL-SDR for general monitoring — worth the price difference?

so ive been using a $25 RTL-SDR v3 dongle for about a year now mostly just listening to aircraft and poking around on HF with the direct sampling mod and honestly it works way better than i expected for the price. but ive been reading a lot about the SDRplay RSP1A and wondering if the jump is actually worth it for someone who isnt doing anything super critical, just general SWL stuff and scanning the local repeaters and occasionally trying to decode some digital modes

the main things i keep seeing mentioned are the dynamic range and the front end being less prone to overload which i can kind of relate to because i live pretty close to a couple FM broadcast towers and sometimes things get messy on the dongle even with a filter. but at like $110-120 for the RSP1A vs $30 for the rtl it feels like a big leap when i dont really know what im missing

anyone gone from one to the other and noticed a real world difference or is it more one of those things where on paper the specs are better but in practice you cant really tell unless youre doing something specific

yeah the difference is real but whether its worth it depends on your situation honestly. i had the same setup as you, rtl-sdr v3 with the direct sampling and it was fine for casual stuff but once i got the RSP1A the noise floor improvement on HF was immediately obvious. like pulling in WSPR signals and weak SSB stations that just werent there before, or were buried in noise.

the overload issue you mentioned is the bigger thing though. the RSP1A has a much better front end and the selectable gain and attenuator settings in SDRuno actually help a lot when youre dealing with strong local signals. the rtl-sdg dongle just kind of falls apart when theres something really strong nearby, you get all kinds of intermod garbage. that said if you mostly do VHF and above and youre not fighting strong interference the gap narrows a bit. for HF its pretty clear cut imo

i mean the HackRF is another option if you want to eventually do transmitting experiments too, its way wider coverage but the noise figure isnt great so for pure receiving the RSPplay stuff and even a decent rtl beats it. just throwing that out there since you didnt mention it

personally i run an RSP1A with SDR++ now instead of SDRuno and it runs a lot smoother on my old laptop, SDRuno always felt kinda bloated to me. anyway point being the software matters almost as much as the hardware once youre past the rtl-sdr level
