I keep hearing about the "exclusive Extra segments" on 80, 40, 20, and 15 meters. Are these frequency privileges really that valuable in practice? I'm trying to decide if the exam effort is worth it for a General who mainly works phone and some digital modes.

Extra privileges give you additional frequencies in the lower segments of 80/40/20/15 meters - often considered choice territory for DXpeditions and contesting. During contests or big DX openings, that extra spectrum is golden. You'll find less QRM and better propagation characteristics in those segments, especially for CW and digital modes.

Absolutely worth it! The first contest weekend I heard tons of people making contacts in those parts of the bands I wasn't allowed to transmit in - my competitive nature got the better of me! The Extra-only segments are where the serious operators congregate during major contests and rare DX operations.

Don't forget you can also administer all three amateur radio license examinations as an Extra. That's a nice privilege for giving back to the community. Plus having access to all frequencies and modes on the HF bands means you'll never feel limited as you explore new aspects of the hobby.
