so i passed my general last month and ive been using my sequential call which is kind of a mouthful, nothing wrong with it but its like 6 characters and my buddy keeps telling me i should just apply for a vanity call. i looked at the FCC ULS site and honestly i dont fully understand how the whole thing works.

from what i can gather there's a window period and then after that it opens up to everyone? but my buddy said something about how certain call districts have shorter calls available and i might be able to get a 1x3 or 2x3 depending on what's available in my area. i just dont want to submit something wrong and mess up my current callsign or have to wait forever.

also is there a fee now? i thought i read somewhere it changed recently. any help appreciated, been lurking here for a while and you all seem to know your stuff

yeah so the fee thing changed a couple years back, it used to be free then they added a $35 fee per application through the FCC. so if you apply for a vanity and dont get it you still pay the $35, just something to keep in mind before you go submitting a bunch of applications.

the window system works like this — when a callsign becomes available (usually because a ham passed away or let their license lapse) it goes into a 18 day window period where certain groups get priority. so like if you're applying for a call that belonged to a silent key who was a relative of yours, you'd have first shot during the first couple days. then it opens up to other applicants and if multiple people apply for the same call during the same window they do a random selection among those applicants, not first come first served exactly. after the window closes if nobody got it then yeah it goes into the general pool.

for finding available calls the ae7q.com site is your best friend, way better than fumbling around the FCC ULS directly. you can search by district and call format and see whats available or coming up. just be patient with the process, took me about 3 weeks to get mine sorted.

oh man i went through this like 6 months ago and was equally confused lol. one thing that tripped me up is that your current callsign stays active while your vanity application is pending so you dont have to worry about losing it or going dark or anything like that. once the vanity gets approved it just switches over and you update your QRZ and youre good to go.

i ended up getting a pretty clean 1x3 in the 7th district which i was stoked about, took maybe two weeks from application to showing up in the system. the ae7q site that people always recommend really is worth bookmarking, it kind of demystifies the whole thing once you poke around it for a bit
