anyone else keep up with regular nets? looking for suggestions

so ive been licensed for about eight months now and i finally got comfortable enough to actually check into a net instead of just listening. did my first check-in on the local 2m repeater net last tuesday and honestly it wasnt as scary as i thought it would be, the net control was really patient when i fumbled my callsign the first time lol

anyway now im kind of hooked and want to find more nets to participate in, especially on HF since i just got my general and i want to actually use those new privileges. ive heard there are some good ones on 40m in the evenings but i dont really know where to start looking for schedules. is there like a central place where nets are listed or do you just have to know people

also saw something about a special event station for a local hamfest coming up next month and im curious how those work, like do you just call them like a normal QSO or is there some kind of certificate you can get afterward? sorry if these are dumb questions just trying to learn

not dumb questions at all, this is exactly the stuff that doesnt get explained in the license manuals. for finding nets, the ARRL has a net directory on their website that you can search by band and mode, its not always perfectly up to date but its a decent starting point. also just asking around on your local repeater works surprisingly well, someone usually knows whats active in the area.

for 40m evening stuff the 7290 traffic net has been around forever and theres a bunch of regional ones scattered around depending on where you are. once you find a couple you like you kind of fall into knowing about others through the people you meet there.

the special event station thing is pretty straightforward, you just work them like any other contact. a lot of them will have a QRZ page or a website listed that explains if theres a certificate or award associated with it. sometimes you fill out a form online, sometimes you send a self addressed envelope the old fashioned way. worth checking before the event ends because some of them have pretty short windows and you dont want to miss it.

yeah i went through the same thing when i first got my general, kinda overwhelming how many nets are out there once you start looking. i ended up just picking one or two and sticking with them for a few weeks until i got the hang of how that particular net runs, because they all have slightly different procedures and it helps to get familiar before jumping around too much.

there was a special event station for a lighthouse activation near me last summer and i worked them on like three different bands trying to get a clean contact, had a great chat with the op between pileups. they had a certificate you could request through their club website and it showed up maybe six weeks later. pretty cool wall art honestly
