first SOTA activation did not go as planned but still had a blast

so i finally did my first ever SOTA activation last weekend up on W4T/SU-001 and man i had no idea what i was in for. i'd been chasing summits for about six months just from home and figured how hard could it be to just go up there yourself right. wrong.

first thing that happened was i forgot my coax adapter so i had to rig something up with what i had in my bag, managed to get the antenna up with some paracord and a random tree branch but the SWR was all over the place for the first like 20 minutes. was starting to think i was gonna have to just walk back down without making a single contact which wouldve been embarrassing after telling everyone on the club reflector i was going up there.

eventually got things sorted and worked 7 stations on 20m SSB which i know isnt a lot but it qualified the summit so i'll take it. W6/CT-002 was in my log which felt pretty cool, guy had a great signal from california. the whole thing took maybe 3 hours including the hike and honestly it was one of the better days ive had in this hobby. already looking at topo maps for next weekend.

anybody else do their first activation recently or have tips for not being so disorganized on the approach? i feel like there has to be a better system for packing the gear.

ha yeah the first one is always a little chaotic, dont sweat it. i think most of us have that story about showing up on the summit and realizing something is missing or wired wrong. i once got all the way up a 6000ft peak in Colorado and realized i hadnt charged the battery pack. just sat there staring at the rig for a solid minute.

what helped me was making a laminated checklist that lives in my pack permanently, not just a checklist i make fresh each time. antenna, feedline, adapters, battery, logbook, key or mic depending on what mode, and so on. sounds overly simple but when youre tired from the hike up and excited to get on the air your brain does dumb things.

7 contacts to qualify is all you need, thats a successful activation any way you look at it. the W6 in the log is a nice bonus too. once you get a few of these under your belt the setup gets way faster, i can have my linked dipole up and be calling CQ in under 10 minutes now most days.

congrats on the first one. i only have like 4 activations myself so im not exactly an expert but the thing that helped me most was joining the SOTA reflector and also just reading trip reports from other activators on the same summit before going up. sometimes people mention specific tree placement or where to set up that makes the antenna situation way easier.

also have you tried posting a spot to SOTAwatch before you go up even if youre not sure exactly when youll be ready? the chasers are super patient and will keep an eye out. made a huge difference for me getting contacts faster once i actually got on the air.
