Michelle Brown's post in SSB audio always sounds like garbage on the other end — what am I missing was marked as the answeryeah what he said about the speech processor is real, that thing can wreck your audio fast if you just flip it on and leave it. i did the same thing when i first got my 7300 and spent like three weeks thinking my mic was defective lol
one thing that actually helped me was finding someone local on a repeater who was willing to do a simplex HF sked just to give me honest audio reports while i tweaked things in real time. way more useful than random contacts on 40m where people are usually too polite to tell you the truth or they're dealing with their own QRM and cant really evaluate your audio properly

Michelle Brown's post in dipole vs vertical for 40m — is it even worth arguing about was marked as the answerI went through this exact same thing last year. ended up building a fan dipole with legs cut for both 40 and 80, hung it up as an inverted V and honestly it works better than i expected even at the low height. not a solution to your question really but if youre already committed to a dipole design the inverted V gets the center up higher and the ends drop down which changes the pattern a bit. might squeeze some more performance out of what you have before spending money on a vertical. just a thought

Getting General class is a must for emergency communications, and allows participation in global HF-based email systems like Winlink.

Michelle Brown's post in finally broke a pileup after like 2 years of trying — here's what actually worked for me was marked as the answeryeah the timing thing is huge and i think its underrated. ive watched guys with kilowatts just steamroll calls continuously and get nowhere while some 100w station comes in with one precise call right at the right moment and gets through clean. the DX op can actually hear the brief silence and pick you out.
the partial call thing is interesting too — depends a lot on the operator running the DXpedition. some of those big expeditions have really experienced ops who are great at pulling partials and building the call, others not so much and they'll just move on if they dont get the full thing. if you can figure that out early it changes your strategy.
one thing i'd add is band conditions matter more than almost anything with the really rare ones. ive worked stuff on 100w that guys with full legal limit couldn't crack because i happened to catch a short grey line opening where my signal was just better positioned. patience across multiple operating sessions is probably worth more than any technique tbh.

Michelle Brown's post in finally got my 857D mounted in the truck but now i have an RF noise problem was marked as the answeryeah that RPM-varying whine is almost certainly alternator noise getting into either the power leads or the coax shield. the first thing id do honestly is add a ferrite choke right at the radio on the power leads, like snap-on types work fine for this, nothing fancy. also check that your power cable isnt running parallel to any factory wiring for long runs because that can couple noise in too.
the door seal coax routing is probably contributing at least a little since youre not getting a great shield connection at the entry point. if you can get the coax in through the firewall thats almost always cleaner. for the mag mount ground plane issue on trucks with plastic stuff yeah its real, the NR770HB will work but youre not getting ideal performance. a lip mount or a hole mount through the roof would be a big improvement but i get that its a bigger commitment. start with the ferrites and see how much that cleans things up first before you go drilling holes anywhere

Michelle Brown's post in finally built my first wire dipole from scratch — some questions was marked as the answer22 feet for 40m inverted V is definitely on the low side but its not useless by any means. the inverted V compresses the radiation angle a bit compared to a flat top, which some people say hurts DX but honestly at that height neither configuration is doing great for low angle radiation anyway, you're mostly doing NVIS and regional stuff whether you like it or not.
i ran an inverted V at similar height for probably three years before i got the apex up to 35 feet and the difference was noticeable but not dramatic. the bigger thing i noticed was the feedpoint impedance drops quite a bit on the inverted V compared to 50 ohm flat top, so your 1.4 SWR actually sounds like your balun and wire length are doing something right. the 120 degree angle is pretty good, some guys go way more droopy than that and then wonder why their SWR is all over the place. if you can get even 5 more feet on the apex itll help, but dont tear down what works just to chase another half dB.

Michelle Brown's post in when do you actually need to use phonetics vs just saying the letter was marked as the answerso i've been licensed about 8 months now and i still get kind of confused about when i'm supposed to spell things out with phonetics versus just saying the letter normally. like if someone asks for my callsign i just say it normally but then sometimes the other person spells theirs back to me using nato phonetics and i feel like i should be doing that too but also it feels weird to say "whiskey" and "kilo" when i could just... say the letters
is there like an actual rule about this or is it just a custom thing people do. i mostly operate on 2m fm and HF SSB if that makes any difference. also sometimes i try to use phonetics and i blank on one of the letters mid-sentence which is embarassing

Michelle Brown's post in finally putting together a go-kit, what am i missing? was marked as the answerso ive been meaning to do this for like two years and after the storms we had last month i finally got off my butt and started building a proper go-kit. right now ive got my ft-857d, a 40ah lifepo4 battery, a cheap anderson powerpole distribution block, and im planning to throw in a dual band handheld as backup. also grabbed one of those little solar panels, 100w panel from renogy, figured it cant hurt.
what im not sure about is the antenna situation. im thinking a linked dipole for hf and maybe a roll of coax but honestly i dont know if thats overkill or if i should just go with a vertical. the kit is supposed to fit in a single pelican case so space is an issue. and i keep seeing people talk about logging gear and i havent even thought about paper logs vs tablet yet.
anyone been through this process and have a sense of what i wish id packed or what turned out to be useless? im in the midwest so flooding and tornado response is the likely scenario not like wildfire or anything.

Michelle Brown's post in 40m dipole vs vertical for dx — is it even worth the hassle was marked as the answeri did this exact swap last spring. went from an inverted V at about 40 feet to a hamstick-style vertical with like 16 radials and honestly i regret it a little. worked a few new ones on 40 but the noise floor went up noticeably and im in a pretty quiet rural area so i cant imagine what it'd be like in a subdivision. the trap vertical i had before that was even worse, felt like i was running barefoot half the time even at 100w.
if i were doing it over id probably just try to get the dipole higher before scrapping it entirely. even getting from 35 to 50 feet makes a real difference in the pattern
