so ive been messing with Winlink Express for about two weeks now and i cant figure out if im actually hitting a gateway or just spinning my wheels. im running a IC-7300 into a SignaLink USB, mostly on HF, trying to get VARA HF working but also have Packet set up as a fallback. the waterfall looks like something is happening when i initiate a session but then it just times out after maybe 30-40 seconds with no connection established.

i checked the RMS list and theres a few gateways within what should be workable range, like 500-800 miles, and ive been trying on 40m mostly around the winmor/vara frequencies. tuner is working, SWR looks fine. i did get one successful connection like three days ago, sent a test message to myself and it went through, then the next day nothing would connect again.

not sure if this is an antenna thing, propagation, the gateway itself being down, or something wrong with my audio levels. the VARA waterfall shows a carrier but the handshake never completes. anyone dealt with this kind of intermittent thing before?

the handshake timing out like that is almost always audio levels in my experience. too hot going in and VARA just cant decode it properly even though the carrier looks fine on the waterfall. in Winlink Express go to the VARA HF settings and pull your TX audio down — i run mine around 40-50% and it made a huge difference. also check that youre not running any windows audio enhancements on the SignaLink input, those will wreck the signal even if it looks okay visually.

also worth checking the RMS status page on the winlink.org site directly, some gateways go down for days without much notice. i had one near me that was my primary for months and one day it just stopped being maintained. ended up having to go to something 1200 miles out which wasnt ideal but it worked.

yeah propagation on 40m can be really weird for those mid-range distances, youre sometimes in that awkward skip zone where groundwave is too weak and skywave is overshooting. might be worth trying 80m for shorter paths or just watching the band conditions more closely before initiating. the RMS Trimode channel selector in Winlink Express will actually show you which gateways have had recent activity if you sort by last heard, that helps filter out the dead ones.
