so ive been licensed about 8 months now and i feel like im missing out on something. i hear people mention nets all the time at my local club but i honestly dont really know when they happen or how to find them. i know theres the ARRL net directory thing but every time i look at it im not sure which ones are actually active vs just listed there and never updated.

i have HF now (finally got the general last month) so i can do more than just the 2m stuff. evenings after work i usually have like an hour or two and it seems like a waste to just sit there scanning. does anyone have nets they actually enjoy checking into regularly? bonus points if its not super intimidating for someone who still fumbles with the mic sometimes lol

also i keep hearing about special event stations, like theres apparently one coming up for some lighthouse thing? not sure how that works either, do you just call them or do they call you

oh man i remember feeling exactly this way when i first got my general. the net directory is honestly kind of a mess for finding active nets, youre right about that. what worked better for me was just asking at my local club or on the local repeater if anyone knew of good weeknight nets on HF.

for 40 meters there are usually a bunch of traffic nets running in the evenings depending on your region, the NTS nets and stuff like that. they can feel a little formal at first but people are generally pretty patient with newer folks. theres also just a ton of casual ragchew nets if you poke around 7.200 or so in the evenings, though those arent always announced anywhere they just kind of happen.

the lighthouse thing is probably Lighthouse Weekend, they do it every August. special event stations are easy, you just tune around until you hear them calling CQ with their special callsign and then you call them back like any other contact. they usually send you a QSL card if you send them a self addressed stamped envelope. its a good way to get on the air with a purpose if that makes sense

Nets were honestly what got me comfortable actually talking on the radio so good call trying to find some. I do a few different ones depending on the week. Theres a pretty laid back one on 20m that i check into maybe twice a week, usually around 7pm local, net control is super chill and doesnt mind if you fumble a bit.

One thing that helped me was just listening for a few sessions before checking in. you get a feel for the format and what to say and then when you actually check in its not so scary. most nets just want your callsign and maybe your name and location, nothing crazy.

Cant really give you specific frequencies without knowing where you are geographically because it matters a lot for which nets you can actually hit reliably. But if you post your general area im sure someone here can point you to something local or regional on HF that would work well for you.
