ok so i passed my technician exam last saturday and the VE team said my paperwork was submitted to the FCC already. im trying to figure out how long this takes and also whether i can actually pick my callsign or if its just assigned to me automatically.

ive been reading about vanity calls but honestly the whole thing is confusing. like is a vanity call something i apply for right away or do i have to wait until i have a regular call first? and does the sequential call they give you depend on where you live or is it just whatever is next in line? someone at the session mentioned 1x2 and 2x3 formats and i didnt really understand what that meant either. just trying to get a grip on the process before my call shows up in ULS

congrats on passing first of all. so the way it works is the FCC will assign you a sequential callsign automatically, usually within a few days of your license showing up in their system. you can check the ULS database directly to see when it posts. the call format you get depends on your license class and what callsign district youre in based on your mailing address — so a tech in the 4th district like Georgia or Florida would get something like KO4 followed by two or three letters.

the 1x2, 2x1, 2x2, 2x3 stuff just refers to how many letters are on each side of the number. extra class gets access to the shorter formats like 1x2 or 2x1 which are more desireable for a lot of people. as a new tech youll get a 2x3 which is the most common format these days since all the shorter ones got taken a long time ago.

as for vanity calls — you do have to wait until you actually have a callsign assigned before you can apply for a vanity. once your license is in ULS you can go through the vanity application process on the FCC site. theres also a 10 day waiting period after a call becomes available before you can snag it, and if multiple people apply for the same call during that window it goes to whoever has seniority basically. its a whole thing but plenty of people have gotten calls they wanted, just takes some patience.

yeah i went through this same thing like 8 months ago. my sequential call came through in maybe 3 days after my CSCE was submitted, though i've heard it can sometimes take a week or so depending on how backed up things are. i just kept refreshing ULS obsessively lol.

i did apply for a vanity call after and got one that used to belong to a silent key which felt a little weird honestly but also kind of meaningful. the ae7 calls were already all gone for the format i wanted so i ended up with something slightly different than i planned but im happy with it. just dont get too attached to one specific call going in because someone else might grab it
