so i finally worked up the nerve to check into the tuesday night 2m net on the local repeater last week. ive been licensed for about 4 months and mostly just listened but figured it was time to actually get on and say something.

anyway i completely blanked on what to do when the net control called for check-ins. i keyed up at the wrong time, stepped on someone else (sorry whoever that was), and then when i finally got through i gave my callsign in the wrong order i think? like i said my name first and then my call instead of call then name. net control was super nice about it but i still felt like an idiot afterward.

is there like a standard format most nets use for check-ins or does it vary? and how do you know when its your turn if multiple people check in at the same time? i genuinely could not tell who net control was acknowledging half the time. just want to do better next time.

Oh man don't feel bad at all, literally everyone does something like this their first few times. I remember keying up right in the middle of net control's transmission on my first check-in and just hearing that horrible doubling sound. Mortifying at the time but nobody actually cares, they were all new once too.

Most nets do follow a pretty similar pattern -- net control will call for check-ins, you wait for a pause, then key up and just say your callsign phonetically. Some nets want name and location too but usually net control will tell you what they want at the start if you listen to the preamble. The call-then-name thing is pretty standard just because net control is writing down calls and it helps to hear it first, but honestly if you flip it nobody is going to throw you off the air.

The doubling thing where you cant tell who got through, that just takes time to figure out. Net control will usually acknowledge whoever they copied and if they didnt get you, just try again next round. Stick with it, after a few weeks it'll feel completely natural.

yeah i was in the same boat not that long ago. the thing that helped me was just listening to the net for a few weeks before i ever checked in so i kind of knew the rhythm of it. also some nets have their preamble posted online if you can find it, that way you know exactly what format they want before you even key up.
