First Timer at a Hamfest - What Should I Expect?

Finally got my ticket last month and looking to attend my first hamfest. There's a few coming up in my area - RARSfest, SEA-PAC, and a winter swapfest in Brighton. I've heard the flea market is where the real deals are found, but I'm not sure what to look for or what prices are reasonable. Should I bring cash? Any tips for a newcomer who doesn't want to look completely clueless walking around?

Welcome to the hobby! Definitely bring cash - most vendors prefer it and you'll have better negotiating power. You'll find everything from the newest high-tech gear to used, refurbished, or even antique equipment, plus accessories no longer available from manufacturers. Don't be afraid to ask questions - most hams love sharing knowledge with newcomers!

I went to my first hamfest last year and it was overwhelming but awesome! Bring a cart or wagon if you can - you'll be surprised how much stuff you end up carrying. Also, get there early for the best selection but late in the day for the best prices as vendors want to pack less stuff up.

Many hamfests include meetings, seminars on technical and operational aspects, and license exam sessions. Check the schedule beforehand - the forums can be just as valuable as the flea market. I always leave with more knowledge than gear, though that's saying something!
