so ive been a tech for about 2 years now mostly working 2m repeaters and such but really want to get on HF so decided to finally take the plunge. got the arrl book and been going through it but man there's way more math and electronics stuff than the tech test had. anyone have any tips for the harder concepts like impedance matching and all that antenna stuff? also wondering about the band plan questions - do i need to memorize all the frequency ranges or just the general segments we can use?

exam is march 15th at our local hamfest, kinda nervous since i struggled with some of the technical parts in the tech test too. any advice would be great

Don't overthink the math questions - most of them use the same formulas over and over. I made myself a cheat sheet with ohms law, power formulas, and SWR stuff and just practiced plugging numbers in until it was automatic. For band plans honestly i just memorized where we cant go rather than trying to remember all the exact frequencies.

The ARRL exam review website is free and really helped me figure out which topics I was weak on. Take a bunch of practice tests in the last week, when you're consistently getting 30+ right you'll be fine on test day.

i passed mine last year and the antenna stuff was definitely the hardest part for me too. what really clicked was when someone explained that most of the antenna questions are just asking "which antenna is better for this specific job" rather than making you calculate anything complex.

also dont skip the operating procedure questions, there are quite a few of those and theyre way easier than the technical stuff. i probably got 6-7 questions just on proper operating practices and band privileges. good luck!
