Ok so ive been trying to wrap my head around Winlink for the past few weeks and I feel like every time I think I understand it something else confuses me. I get the basic concept, email over radio, but the actual setup is where I'm losing the plot.

Right now I have Winlink Express installed and I can connect via Telnet just fine which I know is just internet, not actual RF. I want to do real HF connections to a gateway but I'm not sure if I need to set up my own RMS gateway or just connect to someone else's. I have a Signalink USB and an IC-7300 and I've been using VARA HF which seems like the thing everyone's using now. I can hear stations on PSKreporter so I know at least I'm receiving something.

The part that's confusing me is the difference between being a Winlink client (just sending/receiving my own mail) vs running an actual RMS gateway that other people can use. I don't think I want to run a gateway, I just want to connect to one. But the documentation kind of mixes these two things together and I'm getting lost. Also what do the different session types actually mean in practice, like when do I pick VARA HF vs Pactor vs Winmor.

Anyone been through this recently and can explain it in plain terms

yeah the docs are kind of a mess if you don't already know what you're doing, which is pretty ironic. ok so to answer your main question — you do NOT need to run your own RMS gateway just to use Winlink. You're the client, you connect to gateways other people are already running. Think of it like wifi, you dont need to run a hotspot just to browse the internet.

For the session types: Pactor is the old reliable but you need a dedicated modem (SCS or similar) which costs real money. Winmor is basically deprecated at this point, dont bother. VARA HF is what you want, it's software based so your Signalink handles it, and the free version works fine to start though the paid version does improve throughput. With an IC-7300 and Signalink you're actually well set up for this, better than a lot of people starting out.

What you do is open Winlink Express, go to Session, pick VARA HF, then it'll scan for nearby gateways or you can pick one manually from the channel list. Just make sure your audio levels are set right on the Signalink or you'll get all kinds of weird issues. The RF power on the 7300 I usually set pretty conservatively, like 25-30 watts, don't need to blast it.

one thing that tripped me up for a while was thinking I had to be in the Winlink RMS list to do anything. you dont. also double check your callsign is registered on the Winlink.org site before you do anything else, the system will just reject you if its not and the error messages are not helpful at all about telling you why.
