so ive been licensed about 3 months now and i mostly just listen on the repeater and sometimes check into the local tuesday night net. last week i heard two guys having a conversation on 2m and there was a pause that went on for maybe 10 seconds and i wasnt sure if they were done or just thinking or whatever so i just stayed quiet. then the one guy came back and kept going so i guess i made the right call.

but it got me wondering - when IS it actually okay to break in? like if someone calls QRZ or says 'any other stations' thats obvious but what about just a regular back-and-forth where they take a breath? i dont want to be rude but i also dont want to miss chances to actually get on the air and talk to people. especially if i hear something where i think i could add something useful to the conversation.

also slightly different question - in a directed net, do you always have to wait for net control to call you or can you just check in whenever theres a gap? i feel like i might have accidentally cut someone off last week and felt bad about it

Good instinct waiting that time out - 10 seconds of silence on a repeater usually means someone just let go of the PTT and is collecting their thoughts, or the squelch tail is still dying down. The general rule I always tell new folks is: if you haven't heard both stations say something like 'back to you' or 'go ahead' or one of them actually says QRZ, just wait. You're not missing much by being patient and you won't step on anyone.

For breaking into a conversation that isnt a net, it's generally acceptable to wait for a gap and just say your callsign once, briefly. Most guys will hear it and say 'we have a station breaking, go ahead' or something like that. Dont key up and start talking - just ID yourself and let them invite you in. Some people get annoyed if you launch into a monologue without being acknowledged first.

On the directed net thing - yeah that one's important. In a directed net, net control is running the show and you really do need to wait to be recognized. If you missed your window to check in at the start, just wait for NC to ask if there are any late check-ins, they almost always do that. You didnt do anything terrible, we all fumble it at first, but just keep that one in mind going forward.

honestly same boat as you like 8 months ago lol. what helped me was just listening to the net for a few weeks without even trying to check in, just to get a feel for how the NC runs it. every net is a little different. some are pretty loose and some NCs run a tight ship where they really do want you to wait your turn exactly.

the thing about breaking into a regular qso - i was told to just say my call once during the pause and see what happens. works pretty well most of the time. worst that happens is they dont hear you and you try again later
