so ive been doing POTA for about a year now and someone at the club mentioned WWFF and i looked into it a bit and it seems similar but with a lot more international flavor? like theres hunters all over europe and japan who really go after these nature reference contacts. anyway i signed up on the wwff.cc site and im planning to activate a local wildlife refuge next weekend, KFF-something, i have to look up the exact reference number.

my question is really just - is the operating style much different from POTA? i know for POTA you just need 10 contacts to validate but for WWFF i read its 44 contacts for a full activation? that seems like a lot more. im running a KX2 with a linked dipole so i should be fine on HF but i just dont want to show up and not understand how it works. do i need to spot myself the same way, like on POTA net or whatever? any tips from people who have done both would be great

yeah you pretty much nailed the main difference - 44 QSOs to get the activation counted in the WWFF log. it sounds like a lot but honestly if you get a decent spot up on the wwff logger and maybe announce it ahead of time on the facebook group or the cluster, you can get a pile going pretty quick especially if there are europeans chasing during their evening. the DX side of WWFF is really active, way more than I expected when i first started doing it.

spotting works similar to POTA, you can self spot on the wwff logger directly or just get on psk reporter and people find you. i'd also recommend posting your planned activation a few days early on the wwff activators group, thats where the hunters hang out and theyll put you in their logs if they know youre coming. the KX2 and dipole combo is totally fine, i do most of mine with a similar setup. have fun with it, the international contacts make it feel really different from a regular POTA run

oh man wildlife refuges are great for this, usually pretty quiet RF wise and you get decent antenna placement. one thing i'd add is double check the exact KFF reference number before you go because ive seen people log the wrong one and then have to fix it later which is a pain. the wwff.cc site has a searchable database, just put in the refuge name and it should come right up. good luck with it
