so ive been on SSB for about a year now mostly on 40m and 20m and honestly my audio reports are all over the place. sometimes guys tell me i sound great, other times im getting 'you're a bit muffled' or 'something sounds off with your audio' and i cant figure out what the variable is. im running an IC-7300 which supposedly has decent audio processing built in but i havent touched most of the defaults. my mic is just the stock HM-219 that came with it.

i know theres a whole rabbit hole of mic gain, compression, the TX bandwidth settings and whatever else but every time i try to tweak one thing something else seems to go wrong. like i bumped up the mic gain trying to get better reports and then somebody told me i was splattering. turned it back down and now im apparently muffled again. feels like im chasing my tail here.

is there a sane starting point for dialing in SSB audio on the 7300 specifically or even just general principles that apply across rigs? and does the stock mic just kind of suck or is it workable if set up right?

the HM-219 is honestly not a great mic for the 7300, it works but it doesnt play to the radio's strengths. the 7300 has that touchscreen parametric EQ on the TX side and the stock mic kind of has a boxy midrange that the default settings dont really compensate for. first thing id do is go into the menu and look at the TX monitor so you can actually hear yourself through the radio - a lot of people never even turn that on and theyre basically flying blind.

for mic gain on SSB the general rule of thumb is you want to be hitting maybe 50-60% on the ALC meter on voice peaks, not pegged constantly. if the ALC is riding at max the whole time youre definitely compressing too hard and that'll cause the splatter people are hearing. the speech processor (COMP function) on the 7300 is pretty decent but it needs to be set with the mic gain right first, not used as a substitute for proper gain staging. i'd set mic gain first with the processor off, get your ALC looking right, then add just a little compression maybe 3-4 on the COMP setting and see how reports change.

also worth asking a local on 40m to give you an honest audio check with the TX monitor going so you can hear what you sound like at the same time they're telling you. that feedback loop is how you actually learn what the adjustments are doing.

yeah the muffled thing is usually low mic gain or the TX bandwidth set too narrow - check what your SSB bandwidth is set to in the menu, some people accidentally have it on like 1.4kHz or something which cuts all the highs and you end up sounding like youre in a tin can. 2.4 to 2.8kHz is pretty normal for general SSB and sounds a lot more natural. i run mine at 2.4 for crowded band conditions and bump it wider when its quieter and i want better fidelity.

also just as a side note, ive had way better results since i switched to an Heil PR-781, night and day difference on 40m SSB. not saying you need to spend money but it made a bigger difference than any menu tweaking i did on the 7300.
