finally got Winlink working but confused about RMS gateway selection

so ive been messing with Winlink Express for about two weeks now and i finally got my first message through last night which felt pretty great honestly. running a IC-7300 into a SignaLink and using VARA HF which took forever to configure but thats a separate story.

my question is about the RMS gateway list and how the software decides which one to connect to. right now im just letting it auto-select based on distance and propagation score or whatever it calculates, but im seeing some gateways that are geographically closer to me showing worse scores than ones further away. is that just current band conditions at the time or is there something about the gateway itself like their antenna setup or how often they beacon that affects that score?

also i noticed some gateways show up on 40m and some on both 40 and 20, does it matter much which band i use for just sending and receiving personal messages? not doing any emcomm stuff yet just kind of learning the system. and one more thing - the message handling side, like what happens if the gateway drops the connection mid-transfer, does Winlink just retry automatically or do i have to manually resend? had one session tonight that looked like it connected but then nothing showed up in my inbox.

the scoring in the channel selector is pulling from the propagation prediction plus beacon timing data so yeah band conditions at your specific moment will move those numbers around a lot. a gateway that looks close on the map might have a directional antenna that doesnt favor your path or they might just be on a noisier piece of spectrum at that hour. i generally override the auto-select when im on 40 in the evenings and just pick a gateway i've had good luck with before, you kind of build a mental list after a while.

for the mid-transfer drop question - Winlink does handle some of that gracefully depending on how far along the session got. if it connected and did the handshake but dropped before finishing the message pull, the server still holds your messages so just reconnect and try again. if you sent something outbound and it dropped, check your Sent folder and also the Outbox because sometimes it stays queued. VARA HF is actually pretty good about resuming but ive had sessions where i had to manually poke it. the 7300 and SignaLink combo is solid once its dialed in, whats your VARA waterfall looking like?

dont overthink the gateway selection too much when youre starting out, honestly. i spent like three days trying to optimize it and in the end just connecting to whatever works is fine for personal traffic. the system is pretty forgiving. 40m tends to be my go-to for regional stuff during the day, 20m if im trying to reach something farther or when 40 is being weird at night.
