bands have been weird lately, missing openings i think?

so ive been noticing the last couple weeks that 17m and 20m have been really inconsistent and i cant figure out if its me or just the bands being bad. like ill check pskreporter and see spots all over europe but then i call CQ for 20 minutes and get nothing. had one morning last tuesday where 15m just absolutely lit up out of nowhere, worked like 6 stations in Japan back to back and then it was gone in maybe 40 minutes. didnt even have time to grab coffee.

ive been trying to follow the solar flux index on spaceweather.com but honestly im not sure im reading it right. like is a SFI of 145 considered good right now or is that just average for where we are in the cycle? i feel like when i first got my ticket a couple years ago the numbers were way lower and everything seemed harder, so im assuming higher is better but the openings still feel random to me.

is there a better way to predict when the DX windows are actually going to happen or is it just luck and being in the right place at the right time? feels like i keep missing the good stuff.

145 is actually pretty solid right now, not peak cycle numbers but definitely workable especially for 15m and 10m if you havent tried 10 lately you might be surprised. the thing about propagation that took me forever to really get is that the solar flux tells you potential but the actual band openings depend on so much other stuff -- time of day, season, your path geometry to the target area, geomagnetic conditions. like you can have a great SFI and then a K-index spike from a CME will just wipe everything out for a day or two.

for predicting openings i'd really recommend looking at VOACAP or even just the online version, you put in your location and target region and it gives you probability charts by hour. its not perfect but it changed how i plan my operating time. also DXMaps is great for seeing real-time cluster spots and you can kind of watch an opening develop in real time. that Japan opening you had sounds like a classic greyline thing by the way, those can be spectacular and yeah they dont last long at all.

yeah same thing happened to me last weekend, i was on 17m and heard a ZL working a pileup and by the time i got my amp warmed up the whole thing had collapsed lol. frustrating but also kind of exciting i guess? like the bands feel alive again compared to a couple years back.

i read somewhere that we might be heading toward solar maximum sooner than predicted which would be cool. fingers crossed 10m stays open into winter this time.
