confused about the vanity callsign process - do i just wait or is there something else i do

so i just passed my technician last month and got assigned a sequential call which is fine but honestly its kind of a mouthful and i was looking into the vanity process through the FCC ULS and im just... confused. like i filed the application a few days ago and it says pending but i dont really know what happens next or how long this takes. i read somewhere that there's a filing window and the shortest callsign formats go fast and i might have missed the window for a 1x2 already but im not even sure what region im in counts as. also does it matter that im still technically a Technician and not General? some of the calls i was looking at said they were previously held by a silent key and i wasnt sure if those go into a pool or if the family can hold onto them or what. sorry for all the questions im just trying to understand how this whole thing works before i get too attached to a specific call

okay so the vanity process has a few moving parts but its not too bad once you get the hang of it. basically when you apply there's a filing window that opens and closes, usually around 30 days i think, and all the applications for the same callsign that come in during that window are treated equally - its not first come first served within the window. so dont panic if you filed a couple days after someone else for the same call, you're still in the same pool. after the window closes the FCC picks one at random if theres more than one applicant, or just grants it if youre the only one.

as for the technician thing - yeah that does limit what formats you can apply for. 1x2 calls are reserved for extras i believe, and 2x3 is the format most technicians and generals can get. still way shorter than whatever sequential thing they handed you probably. and yes, silent key calls do go back into the vanity pool after a certain period, the family can apply to hold it but if nobody does it eventually becomes available. the ARRL has a decent page on all this, worth bookmarking

went through this exact same thing like two years ago when i upgraded to general and wanted a shorter call. honestly the waiting part is the worst, the ULS system doesnt always update super fast and sometimes your application just sits there looking weird for a while. i ended up using one of the callsign lookup sites to track it, i think it was QRZ or maybe ae7q.com, one of those. ae7q especially is really good for seeing the status of vanity applications and what calls are available in your district. just punch in the callsign you want and it'll tell you a lot about it. good luck with it, hope you get something you like
