so ive been a general for about 2 years now and people keep telling me to just go ahead and upgrade to extra but honestly i keep putting it off because the theory sections look pretty intimidating. like i get the basics, worked a fair amount of HF, done some digital modes, but some of this extra class material is just... a lot. the filter design stuff, the advanced propagation theory, oscillator circuits. i dont know if i even need to understand all that to just operate.

i guess my actual question is whether anyone felt like the extra exam actually taught them useful stuff or if its mostly just memorizing formulas you never use again. and also does the full privileges thing actually matter in practice, like how often are those extra sub-bands even useful. im not a contester or anything, mostly just ragchew and some JS8Call

honest answer is it depends on what you want out of the hobby. the extra portions of the bands do matter during contests and pile-ups because thats where a lot of DX stations hang out specifically to work extra class ops, so if you ever get the DX bug youll appreciate having access. but for everyday ragchewing yeah maybe not a huge deal operationally.

the theory though, i actually think it was worth going through even if you forget most of it. something about understanding why a filter works the way it does, or why certain antenna designs have the characteristics they have, makes you a better troubleshooter down the road. you dont need to remember the exact formula for a butterworth response but knowing roughly what its doing helps. the exam itself isnt as bad as it looks once you start drilling the question pool, a lot of it clicks faster than you expect if you already have some general class background. id say just go for it, worst case you learn some stuff and try again.

i just passed mine like 3 weeks ago and tbh the exam wasnt as brutal as i thought it'd be. i used hamstudyorg and just grinded questions for maybe 3 weeks on and off. the harder theory stuff like transmission line calculations i kind of just memorized the pattern for the math without fully getting it but hey it worked lol. the band privileges are nice to have even if you dont use them constantly, its one of those things where youll be glad you have it when you need it
