so i passed my general last month and ive been using my sequential call which is fine but its kind of a mouthful and i wanted to look into getting a vanity call. i started reading the FCC ULS stuff and honestly it just made my head spin a little.

from what i can tell you apply during a window and then if multiple people apply for the same call it goes to whoever has the highest license class? or is it actually random if theres a tie? i read somewhere that it used to be a straight up auction years ago which seems wild.

also im still a general so does that limit which calls i can even apply for, like can i only get a 2x3 or whatever the format is called. my elmer kind of glossed over this part and said just wait til i upgrade but im curious now. the call i want doesnt seem super popular so maybe itd be fine to just apply and see what happens

yeah its not really a lottery exactly, its more like a hierarchy. when the application window closes (i think its around 18 days?) the FCC looks at all the apps for that specific call and the highest license class wins. if theres still a tie at that point then yeah it does come down to something like a random pick but that doesnt happen super often for obscure calls.

as a general you can apply for 1x3, 2x3, or 2x4 format calls depending on whats available in your district. the shorter ones like 1x2 and 2x2 are reserved for extras. so if the call you want is something like W4XYZ format you should be totally fine to apply as a general. just go through the ULS application system, its clunky but once you find the vanity application section its pretty straightforward. good luck, hope you get the one you want

i just went through this a few weeks ago actually. the 18 day window thing is real and it felt like forever waiting lol. i applied for a call that had been my grandfathers and since i was the only one who applied i just got it automatically which was really nice. so if the call youre after isnt a popular one you might just get it without any competition at all

one thing i didnt realize going in - make sure the call you want is actually in the available pool before you apply. there are some websites that let you search what callsigns are available, AE7Q is a good one i think, saves you from applying for something thats already taken or in a grace period from a recently expired license
