so i finally got off my butt and did a WWFF activation at a state forest near me, KFF-something i dont remember the number off the top of my head. Been wanting to do this for like a year and kept putting it off. Anyway i took the FT-891 and my end fed halfwave and just set up at a picnic table near the trailhead, nothing fancy.

Made 44 QSOs which i was pretty happy with for a first attempt, mostly on 40m with a few on 20 when the band opened up in the afternoon. Got spotted on the WWFF spotter network after maybe my 5th contact which helped a lot, people were definitely hunting me.

My question is around logging - i was using paper in the field and then transferred everything to my logging software when i got home. Do i need to upload to the WWFF database directly or does it go through ADIF or what? I looked at the website and got a bit confused with the different portals. Also does the reference need to be verified somehow before i can count my 44 contacts toward the activator score or is it automatic once i upload?

Also for anyone whos done a lot of these - is 44 enough to get the activation credited or is there a minimum i missed somewhere?

congrats on the first one, 44 is a solid number for a first activation. The minimum for a valid WWFF activation is 44 contacts so you literally hit the floor exactly, cutting it close haha. You're good though.

For uploading - you want to export your log as an ADIF file and then upload it through the wwff.us portal if you're in the US, or the main wwff.world site depending on how the reference is registered. The ADIF upload is pretty straightforward once you find the right menu, just make sure your callsign and the KFF reference number are in there correctly. Some logging programs let you set the WWFF reference as a field so it gets embedded in the ADIF automatically which makes life easier.

Once its uploaded it usually gets processed within a day or two and you'll see it show up in your activator totals. No manual verification step really, the system checks the log. If theres an issue someone from the admin team usually reaches out.

Yeah what he said about the 44 minimum, you literally made it by one contact which is pretty funny. I made the mistake of ending my first activation at 40 QSOs because i thought i was being cautious and had to go back to the same park just to get it to count, so learn from my pain.

One thing i'd add - if you're planning to do more of these, get the Hunter/Activator app or at least bookmark the WWFF spotter page on your phone. Being able to self-spot quickly when you first get on the air makes a huge difference in how fast the pileup builds. I usually just text a friend to spot me while im still setting up the antenna but the self-spot tools work fine too.
