ok so ive been licensed for about 3 months now (tech class) and im still trying to figure out the whole repeater thing. i programmed my baofeng to hit the local 146.940 machine and it seems to work sometimes but other times nothing happens when i key up. talked to a guy at the club meeting and he mentioned something about CTCSS tones but honestly i got a little lost after that.

from what i can tell, CTCSS is like a sub-audible tone that you transmit along with your audio so the repeater actually opens up and lets you in? is that right? i have my radio set to 100.0 hz right now which i got off a repeater directory website but im not sure if thats correct for this machine. sometimes i hear other people chatting on it just fine but when i try to kerchunk it nothing happens. its probably something dumb im doing but i cant figure out what.

also completely unrelated but is there some kind of rule about how long you should wait before jumping into a conversation on a repeater? dont want to step on anyone but also dont want to just sit there listening forever if its ok to say hi

yeah you've got the basic idea right - CTCSS (some people call it PL tone, which stands for Private Line, which was Motorola's old trademark for it) is a continuous tone below about 300hz that rides along underneath your voice. the repeater's receiver is set to only open up if it hears that specific tone, otherwise it ignores you. so if you're transmitting the wrong tone or no tone at all, the machine just won't respond even though your signal might be getting in there fine.

the 100.0 you got from the directory might be right but it also might be out of date - repeater info on those sites gets stale pretty fast. best thing to do is find the actual repeater trustee or club that runs it and just ask them directly. most repeater owners have a website or are on the club's contact list. you can also try calling the club's net night if they have one and just ask on the air, folks are usually happy to help a new tech figure out the local machines.

as for jumping into a conversation - just listen for a pause between transmissions and during that gap say your callsign. like literally just "W1XYZ" or "W1XYZ monitoring" and they'll usually acknowledge you. dont just start talking over someone mid-sentence, wait for the tail of the repeater to drop and then jump in. its pretty casual on most machines honestly.

one thing that got me when i was starting out - make sure your radio is set to transmit the tone, not just receive it. on baofengs the menu can be a little confusing because there's separate settings for encode and decode. you want encode on for sure. decode (where the radio squelches until it hears the tone) is optional and some people turn it off so they can hear everything on the frequency. just double check which one you actually have enabled because i spent like two weeks wondering why i couldn't hit the repeater and it turned out i had decode on but not encode, so i was hearing everyone else but not getting into the machine at all lol
