so i checked into a local 2m net last night for maybe the third or fourth time and im pretty sure i jumped in at the wrong point. the net control was doing something - i think calling for mobile stations specifically? - and i just threw my callsign out there anyway. nobody said anything but there was this awkward pause and then net control just kind of moved on. i felt like an idiot.

i guess my question is how are you supposed to know when its your turn to check in vs when they're asking for a specific group. do most nets explain this at the start and i just wasnt paying close enough attention, or is there some kind of standard format i should already know about. ive listened to the ARRL stuff but honestly their explanations are a little dry and dont always match what actually happens on a real net.

also does anyone know if its rude to check into the same net like every week or is that actually encouraged. i dont want to be that guy who shows up constantly and annoys everyone lol

oh man dont worry about it at all, everyone does something like that when they're getting started. nets can be weirdly hard to follow at first because every net control has their own style and some of them go through the check-in categories really fast. most formal nets will call something like "mobile and portable stations" then "fixed stations" and so on, but honestly some nets are so casual they just open it up to everybody at once. if you missed the category cue you'll figure it out pretty quick after a few more sessions.

and yes, checking in every week is completely normal and actually most net managers love it because consistent check-ins help them keep the repeater trustee happy and show that the net has active participation. some guys have been checking into the same Tuesday night net for literally decades. you're not annoying anyone, trust me.

if you're still unsure just listen for an extra session or two before you jump in. and if you ever do check in at the wrong time, net control will usually just acknowledge you and slot you in, no big deal.

yeah same thing happened to me on my first few check-ins lol. i actually asked the net control directly after the net closed one time - just said hey i'm new to this can you explain how the check-in order works - and he spent like ten minutes walking me through it. most net control operators are super happy to help if you just ask. way better than guessing.
