so i just got my technician license about 3 weeks ago and ive been checking into the local 2m net on Tuesday nights. last night the net control asked if anyone had any announcements and i thought that meant like... general questions too? so i keyed up and asked about where to find a good SWR meter and there was this long awkward pause and then net control just kind of moved on without really responding.

i felt pretty dumb afterward. nobody said anything rude but i could tell it wasnt the right time for that. is there like a written guide somewhere on what you're supposed to do and not do on a net? i didnt realize announcements meant club stuff only. or does it vary by net? im still figuring all this out and dont want to step on toes but also dont want to be so scared i never key up at all.

oh man dont feel too bad about that, we've all done something like that early on. every net runs a little differently honestly. some net controls are pretty strict about keeping things on-script - check-ins, traffic, announcements meaning club/event stuff - and others are pretty loose and will let almost anything fly at the end. the key is just listening to a few sessions before you jump in so you can get a feel for how that particular net is run.

a lot of nets will have a round for general comments or questions at the very end, after all the formal stuff is done. if youre not sure, you can always just check in, pass when its your turn, and then after net control says the net is closed, just call him or her direct and ask your question then. most net controls are more than happy to chat after. the net itself is kind of a structured thing but the frequency doesnt go dead the second its over.

and honestly an SWR meter question is a totally reasonable thing, it just belongs more on a ragchew or a club meeting rather than mid-net. you'll get the hang of it fast, the fact that youre paying attention and worrying about it means youre already ahead of a lot of new hams.

yeah i did almost the exact same thing on my first net checkin lol. keyed up during the liaison report part thinking it was open floor. net control was super nice about it but i wanted to disappear. its one of those things nobody really explains beforehand and you kind of have to learn by doing or by watching. your club might have a nets and operating practices document somewhere, worth asking around. either way youre going to be fine, just keep checking in.
