ok so i've only been licensed about 8 months and i feel like i'm finally starting to pay attention to band conditions more than just spinning the dial hoping something comes in. the last few weeks on 10m have been kind of insane though - i worked a bunch of south american stations last tuesday afternoon just completely out of nowhere, like signals were s9 and then an hour later nothing. is this just normal solar cycle stuff or did something specific happen?

i've been checking the solar flux index on the NOAA site but honestly i don't really understand what i'm looking at. like the number was 187 the other day and i dont know if that's good bad or what. someone at my club mentioned something about a geomagnetic storm messing things up but then 10m was great so i'm confused. any help appreciated, im trying to actually understand this stuff not just get lucky

187 SFI is really good - anything above about 150 and 10m starts doing crazy things, especially in the afternoon when the F2 layer is fully cooked. we're on the upswing of Solar Cycle 25 right now and it's been performing better than most predictions honestly. those south american openings you're seeing are classic F2 propagation, signals can go from nothing to wall-to-wall in like 20 minutes then fall off a cliff just as fast.

the geomagnetic storm thing your club guy mentioned is a separate deal - a K-index spike will actually kill HF propagation even when solar flux is high, which is why it seems contradictory. if the K-index is 4 or above you're going to have a rough time on the higher bands, but if it settles back down and the SFI is still elevated you can get these insane openings right after. some of my best DX has come right on the tail end of a storm when conditions are recovering. yeah same thing happened to me last week, i was just tuning around on 10 and all of a sudden there was this pile up on like 28.490 and i jumped in and worked a LU station first call which never happens to me lol. my antenna is a dipole in the attic so not exactly ideal. i've been using pskreporter to track where my signal is getting out and it's kind of addictive watching the map light up during an opening.

i dont fully get all the solar flux stuff either so you're not alone, i just sort of check DX clusters and if i see spots on 10 i run over and see whats there
