so i just passed my technician exam about three weeks ago and im still trying to figure out exactly what im allowed to do. i know i have HF privileges on 10 meters but i keep reading different things about whether i can do phone on 10m or just CW. and then someone at the club meeting told me there's also something on 15 meters for techs? but i looked it up and couldnt find it. i dont want to accidentally transmit somewhere im not supposed to and get in trouble with the FCC, part 97 is honestly kind of dense and hard to read through. is there like a simple breakdown somewhere or can someone just tell me what my actual phone privileges are on HF

yeah part 97 can be a wall of text, totally get the confusion. so for tech on HF you basically get CW on a bunch of bands but for phone it's really just 10 meters, specifically 28.300 to 28.500 MHz for SSB phone. there's no 15m phone for techs, whoever told you that was probably mixing something up or thinking of general class. you also get some RTTY and data privileges on a few bands but honestly most new techs just stick to VHF/UHF until they upgrade anyway. the ARRL website has a frequency chart that's way easier to read than the actual part 97 text, i'd start there. and dont stress too much about accidentally going out of band, just double check your radio's display and you'll be fine

i was in the same boat like six months ago lol. the arrl band plan chart is your friend, just google it and bookmark it. the actual FCC rules are technically what matters legally but the arrl chart matches up and is way more readable. one thing i'll add is just be careful because even if you're on an allowed frequency your license class also determines your maximum power and mode so like there's more to it than just the frequency range. but honestly for day to day operating just know your phone segment on 10m and you're good, i barely touched HF until i got my general anyway
