finally pulled the trigger on an IC-7300 - few things i wasnt expecting

so ive been running an old TS-480SAT for like 6 years now and honestly it served me well but i kept reading about the 7300 and watching videos and eventually i just caved and ordered one last month. figured id share some thoughts since i was on the fence forever and maybe itll help someone in the same position.

first thing that surprised me was how much i actually use the touchscreen. i thought it was gonna be a gimmick but its genuinely useful for the spectrum scope, being able to just tap where you want to go is way faster than i expected. the waterfall display is addictive, i catch signals i would have totally scrolled past on the 480.

the thing i wasnt prepared for is how different the audio sounds. not bad, just different. took me a few days of tweaking the DSP settings before it felt natural to me. the NR is pretty aggressive out of the box and i had to back it off a bit or voices started sounding kinda hollow and weird.

one thing thats mildly annoying - the fan kicks on pretty quick and it is audible. my shack is quiet so maybe thats just a me problem but with the 480 i barely noticed it. small complaint in the grand scheme of things.

overall im happy with it. just wanted to give an honest take rather than the usual "this radio will change your life" stuff you see everywhere.

yeah the fan noise thing is real, my buddy has one and mentioned the same thing. i think there are some threads on eham about modifying the fan curve or swapping it out but i wouldnt mess with it while its under warranty personally.

the waterfall really is something else though. i demoed one at a hamfest and spent like 20 minutes just watching signals go by without even transmitting. almost bought one on the spot. still running my 756 pro III and its hard to justify the switch when the old girl still works fine but the spectrum display alone is tempting.

how are you finding it for digital modes? im specifically curious about FT8 and whether the built in USB audio interface is clean enough or if people are still using external sound cards with it. i have a signalink sitting around and not sure if id bother hooking it up or just go straight from the radio.
