so i just got my technician license a few weeks ago and ive been lurking on local repeaters mostly but i keyed up once and tried to give my callsign and i kind of fumbled it because i wasnt sure if i was supposed to use phonetics or just say the letters normally. i said my call once normally and then tried to do phonetics but i couldnt remember what N was so i just said November and then blanked on the rest and it was kind of embarrassing honestly

anyway my question is like, is it actually required to use the NATO phonetics specifically or can you just say any word that starts with the right letter. i heard someone on the radio say Nora instead of November once and someone else corrected them which seemed kind of harsh. just trying to figure out what the actual rule is before i embarrass myself again

not required by law, no. the FCC just says you have to identify with your callsign, it doesnt specify how you pronounce it. NATO phonetics are standard and pretty much universally understood which is why everyone uses them, but using Nora instead of November isnt illegal or anything. that said if youre on a busy repeater or doing any kind of DX work or contest stuff, using the standard ones just makes life easier because everyone already knows them, no ambiguity

the person who corrected that other op was being a bit much honestly. yeah stick to NATO when you can but if you blank on one just say something that starts with the right letter and move on. nobody is gonna report you to the FCC for saying Nora. just practice them until they're automatic, i printed a little card and taped it to my radio for the first few months and that actually helped a lot

yeah i had the same issue when i started, blanking mid-callsign is the worst feeling lol. i basically just drilled them every morning like flashcards until they stuck. the tricky ones for me were X-ray and Uniform, kept wanting to say Uncle for U which apparently some older ops still do from like pre-NATO days or something. once they click though they really do become automatic pretty fast
