first time doing a net check-in, not sure what i did wrong

so i finally worked up the nerve to check into a local 2m net last thursday. ive been licensed for about 4 months now (tech) and kept telling myself id do it eventually. anyway the net control called for check-ins and i keyed up and gave my callsign but i think i did it wrong because nobody acknowledged me and they just moved on. i waited and tried again later and same thing. i wasnt sure if my signal was getting out or if i just wasnt timing it right or what. the repeater is only like 8 miles away and ive used it to make contacts before so i dont think its an rf issue. maybe i held the key too long before talking? or not long enough? i honestly have no idea what the proper timing is supposed to be. does anyone have tips for how to actually do a net check-in correctly because i feel like i missed something obvious

Oh man this happens to almost everyone their first time, dont feel bad at all. The timing thing is real - a lot of repeaters have a courtesy tone and if you key up before it drops you can step on the tail of whoever just finished talking and net control might not hear you cleanly. Try waiting just a half second after you hear the repeater unkey before you transmit. Also when you give your callsign, say it clearly and maybe say it twice the first time so NCS has a chance to catch it if they were writing something down. Some nets also have a specific way they want check-ins - like just callsign only, or callsign plus location, so it might be worth listening to the net a couple times before trying again to see what format everyone else is using.

yeah the timing thing gets me too sometimes and ive been doing nets for years lol. another thing - some nets move pretty fast and if NCS is writing down a bunch of calls at once they might just miss one. a lot of them will do a second call for late check-ins or missed stations so if you hear that just try again. also worth just emailing or messaging whoever runs the net and asking, most net managers are super happy to help new folks figure it out. its not like youre being graded on it
